Finding a Theme for My 365 Project
Have you heard of the popular 365 projects sweeping the web recently? (Leap day make this year is a 366 project :) It's a photo project where you commit to taking at least one photo a day for an entire year. Typically, this project begins on January first, but you could also start on a birthday, wedding, or any regular old day.
Some people photograph around an emotional theme like joy or beauty. Some work on composition goals to improve their photography skills. Still others use daily prompts like those here at Fat Mum Slim to guide their images.
This can be a yearly or a monthly project using any type of camera, even your camera phone. Some people use sites like Instagram and Facebook to edit, organize, and share their photos. Others keep it personal and make a coffee table display book at the end of the year. Personally, I love the image overlays that Elle from Ellementary Home is using here. I am currently trying to find a (free) way to imitate her style...
I was initially drawn to this idea because my husband and I are notoriously bad photographers. Scratch that. We are okay photographers. We just forget to actually use the camera. You'd think that previously working in a field where I took images all day long (okay ultrasound images, but still) would make me trigger happy with the camera, but it hasn't.
To illustrate my point about how bad we are at remembering to take photos, the last pregnant photo of myself is a large group shot taken two weeks before our daughter's birth. Oh how I wish I had a REALLY pregnant picture of myself. Another example, during our daughter's third month of life we only took the camera out three times for a total of eleven images!! (What can I say? We were sleep deprived, colic and infant acid reflux were leaving their mark.)
I guess it's no surprise that I missed the January 1st start date. Crippled by a lack of vision and indecision, I moved the start date back February - beginning on my 28th birthday. I never did narrow down a theme, but I've decided I'm okay with that. It's just me, using my little point and shoot camera, capturing whatever strikes my fancy that day....
